Overview

The group’s major focus is to strengthen capacities in partner countries in the area of infectious disease surveillance and control. We work closely with national health authorities in order to support early disease detection and outbreak response and develop collaborative projects and research activities to strengthen health protection.

Together with the Interdisciplinary Academy of Competence & Education for Global Health at BNITM we provide trainings for public health experts, including laboratory personnel and surveillance experts.

Methods applied and established together with experts in partner countries include:

  • Wastewater-based surveillance of infectious diseases and antimicrobial resistance
  • Molecular methods for detection and diagnostics of pathogens
  • Whole genome sequencing and bioinformatics for molecular surveillance
  • Pathogen genetics and genomics to study infection dynamics
  • Laboratory quality management and biosafety
  • Strategic planning and implementation of preparedness and response activities for global health security
  • Support of outbreak response in affected countries through networks such as the German Epidemic Preparedness Team (SEEG) or the Global Outbreak and Response Network (GOARN)
