Numbers of experimental animals in Germany as a whole and at the Bernhard Nocht Institute

Current numbers of laboratory animals (only in German) for the Federal Republic of Germany and the federal states in 2020 can be found in the Fact Sheet of the Information Initiative Understanding Animal Experiments.

Facts and figures for the Federal Republic of Germany

In the Federal Republic of Germany, the number of laboratory animals has remained stable in recent years, although the volume of research is constantly increasing. Mice are used most frequently in animal experiments. The slight decline in the number of laboratory animals in 2022 is due to Corona-related special effects worldwide.

In research approaches with animals, we exclusively use rodents, of which we most frequently use mice. The "other rodents" are the African rodent Mastomys natalensis (many-toed mouse), which is the natural reservoir host of the Lassa virus.
