Motivation and Objectives
Research on poverty-related and neglected diseases is crucial because these illnesses predominantly affect the world's most vulnerable populations, causing immense suffering, disability, and death. Despite their devastating impact, they have historically been overlooked, receiving insufficient attention and resources. This neglect perpetuates a cycle of poverty and inequality, leaving millions without adequate medical care.
Neglected diseases like snakebite envenoming, which causes over 100,000 deaths and severe disabilities annually, are prime examples of this issue. They disproportionately impact poor, rural communities with limited access to healthcare. Despite their severity, these conditions are often excluded from major funding and research initiatives, resulting in a lack of effective treatments, insufficient health infrastructure, and limited public awareness.
Addressing these neglected health conditions is critical not only to alleviate immediate suffering but also to break the broader cycle of neglect that disproportionately affects the most vulnerable populations. By bringing attention and resources to these issues, we work towards more equitable access to healthcare.
Our main aim is to contribute to reducing morbidity and mortality of neglected diseases and envenoming and to support neglected populations. To do so, we are conducting projects with local partners on:
Improvement of Clinical Management
Epidemiology and Mapping
Digital Tools
