EARTHS - Education and Research-oriented Training on Health Sciences

Since 2017, the Health Sciences Department at the Hamburg University of Applied Sciences (HAW Hamburg) is organising the EARTHS (Education and Research-oriented Training in Health Sciences) Summer School in cooperation with the Research and Transfer Centre "Sustainable Development and Climate Change Management" (FTZ-NK) at HAW Hamburg and the iACE Academy at the Bernhard Nocht Institute for Tropicial Medicine. It comprises a four-week training programme, targeting Master's and PhD students from developing countries (Africa, Asia and Latin America) who have been awarded a DAAD in-country/in-region scholarship and hold a primary qualification in health sciences, public health, veterinary sciences or a life sciences related field with a human health focus.

EARTHS aims to prepare university students and junior researchers for the tasks of teaching and research in their respective institutions. It focuses on strengthening students' qualitative and quantitative research skills, specifically those related to research statistics and epidemiology; the development of research projects; selected science communication tools targeting different audiences; and the use of interactive teaching and presentation skills. The programme also aims to introduce participants to current and historic aspects of German culture, and to facilitate the building of bridges among the highly international participants as well as German researchers.
